The 140 meter long suspension bridge and hiking on the Stubnerkogel in the summer

On our last day of vacation we choose the Stubnerkogel bahn in Bad Gastein, because we would like to take a good walk. And we succeeded 😉 . Although the walk could have been even better, but you will read that later. We drive about 50 minutes from our stay in Viehhofen to get to the Stubnerkogel Bad Gastein.

Table of Contents

Stubner bullet Bad Gastein

The Stubnerkogel is 2250 meters high and therefore the highest of the four mountains in the immediate vicinity of Bad Gastein, where there is plenty to do in the summer. In addition to the Stubnerkogel, you also have the Schlossalm, the Graukogel and Fulseck.

The choice for the Stubnerkogel was not easy. There isn't enough time to see all four mountains, nor really a second mountain, so the first choice has to be a hit. Since the Stubnerkogel is the only one with a 140 meter long suspension bridge, I know how to tempt the rest to defy this mountain 😉 . I didn't let the kids choose honestly. If I'd told them that the Schlossalm is some sort of paradise for children, I'm afraid I wouldn't have gotten them. So I left that out.

The suspension bridge on the Stubnerkogel

Fortunately, they were also very satisfied with the suspension bridge, although 140 meters sounds a lot more spectacular than it is. Keep that in mind. The suspension bridge is a nice gimmick, but the walk down the mountain is actually much more fun. But of course the suspension bridge had to be done 'just for a while'.

On the suspension bridge you have the opportunity to have a photo taken of yourself. Costs nothing and a nice idea. You just have to scan with the barcode of your ticket, run to the red 'spot' and then beep-beep-beep the photo is taken. However, the art is to find that photo online again 😉 . We failed. We may be a bit impatient now - and of course we would have taken a selfie ourselves - but then you know that.

You also have a beautiful view of the suspension bridge… it's pretty f**cking deep, that valley!

Viewpoints on the Stubnerkogel

You have several viewpoints on the Stubnerkogel. The Glocknerblick… guess what, what would it look like now? Precisely on the Grossglockner that we have already seen the day before. A little lower is another lookout point, the Felsenweg.

Walking on the Stubnerkogel

The walking itself is actually the most beautiful here. We started with a bit towards the highest work of art in all of Europe. Not the artwork itself is the highest, by the way, but it is in the highest place.

Then we went via the suspension bridge to the other side of the restaurant which is on top of the mountain. Eat an apple and move on. The plan is to climb the mountain below. There aren't many people we see going up there, but that top, it looks so tempting that we're going for it. The walk would take an hour. Do you think it is doable? But man-man-man… how steep was that 🙁 . Not bad in itself, but I am then forced to catch my breath every 20 steps. Lack of fitness probably, but I know I also suffer from altitude sickness, so that will undoubtedly play a part as well. We are not that far on our way when it turns out that we were also a bit mistaken in time. It is already 14.45 and at 15.45 the last elevator goes down. So we're not going to make it from bottom to top -and back again!

So dropped out. A pity, but unfortunately… then we really should have got out of bed earlier. And since I am writing blogs every evening until about 1 am or 1:30 am this week, I failed again this morning. Reaching the top of this mountain was the ultimate goal and -certainly for Frank- added some extras to this day.

Walking to the valley

From the top of the Stubnerkogel a beautiful hiking trail leads all the way to the valley. We only did the first part of the hike from the top to the intermediate lift. Good for about an hour to an hour and a half and also good with children. The conversations ranged from 'you sweat a heart on your back' to 'haha, you perspire a Mickey Mouse'. You would think we were delirious, but no… just the hard truth. Because of the bright sun, all four of us were happy to have a coke at the bottom of this stage. But very beautiful!

Along the way we had some fun with cows and horses that roam free and are just close to the path. Since our trip to the Baumzipfelweg, Lotte is no longer fond of cows 😉 .

We finally got into the elevator here at 4 pm because it would close not long after. The kids were still having fun and walking all the way to the valley would probably have negated that. However, I do think that the walk is definitely worth it. If you can do it at your leisure, you can walk between the trees. The first leg is above the tree line, so in full sun.

Up the mountain with smaller children?

If you really go up with smaller children, I would recommend the Schlossalm. There is just a little more entertainment for them on top of the mountain with a bouncy castle, a small round around a lake and a trail for the children to do.

Tip:We are staying this holiday ourselves in Viehhofen, at Landal Greenparks Rehrenberg. A great location with very nice apartments. Viehhofen is quite centrally located and all the activities we did were within an hour's drive at most.
