With an area of over 82 km, Formentera is the smallest island of the Balearic Islands and is located 6 km south of its big sister Ibiza. It has paradisiacal beaches and a crystal clear azure blue sea. You won't find any mountains there – the highest point is 192 meters – but it is a misconception to assume that the island is only suitable for a lazy beach holiday. Hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers will certainly get their money's worth. The traffic bureau has set out 32 signposted routes, the majority of which can be explored on foot or by bike. From a 30-minute walk to a brisk three-hour walk, you can explore the island in all its facets and corners. Runners want to note May 14 in their agenda:then the half marathon will be organized on the island. All routes can be downloaded for GPS. Download an English activity brochure here.
Of the 32 routes, 14 are classified as easy, ranging from 1.5 km to 12 km. The routes lead from majestic cliffs with beautiful views over the sea to inland with varied landscapes, craft markets and protected natural parks. A nice route is for example route 2, a distance of 5.6 km, you walk from the port of La Savina along the salt lake Estany Pudent to the capital Sant Francesc Xavier and end in the coastal town of Es Pujols. The Ses Salines Natural Park is a breeding ground for flamingos, herons and ducks, especially in the winter months.
Route number 5 leads along the northwest coast of Formentera up to the tower of La Gavina. From this viewpoint you have a view of the islands of Es Vedrá, Es Vedraneli and Eivissa.
The longest route is route number 32:el Pilar de la Mola. The 12 km long route starts at the famous lighthouse Faro de La Mola on the eastern tip of the island.
There are many locations on the island where you can rent a mountain bike or ATB bike, trails are suitable for sporty beginners to more experienced bikers. Various mountain bike races are organized in October.
There are also beautiful diving locations, wonderful sup and kayak trips along the coast or rent a sailing/motor boat for a day trip around the island.
The mild climate throughout the year and the rugged landscape of Formentera make the island an ideal place for long trips on horseback. Horseback riding enthusiasts can choose from various outdoor rides, including a ride on the beach with sunset.
