Wandering around a new city or destination with no idea where the fun stuff is – we all know it. This doesn't have to be the case. Follow these tips and you'll be in touch with the locals in no time.
Rent an apartment or house instead of a hotel room
Hotel rooms are usually located near major tourist attractions. In other words, if you choose this accommodation option, you may never get a real feel for the city in question. A viable alternative is to book a holiday home. The best part is that renting a house or condo is often comparable or even cheaper than a hotel room, and you get tons of extra benefits, including a kitchen.
Go to a sporting event
Whether it's football, basketball or baseball – watching a local sporting event is a great way to see how the locals relax. Just make sure you wear neutrals:you don't want to be the only person in red to be among ardent blues supporters.
Don't eat everywhere
A few simple rules when it comes to food:1. Never eat anywhere that is internationally recognizable because of its logo; 2. Never eat anywhere that advertises an English or Dutch menu; 3. Never eat at a fast food chain you recognize – no matter what hangover you have.
Learn a little bit of the language
The four words you definitely need are:“Yes”; "No"; You should at least know “Sorry” and “Thank you”. More is of course recommended.
Don't be afraid to haggle
In most places it doesn't hurt to try a little bargaining. They are used to it and expect it.
Go to a supermarket
At home grocery shopping may not be your favorite pastime, but on vacation it's a fascinating world of exotic foods, inexpensive souvenirs and a chance to see foods and sweets that you can't find in the grocery store at home.
Don't take the subway
Underground you can get from A to B quickly, but how are you ever going to get to know a city if you travel under it instead of through it? Take the bus, bike or even better, walk.
