A children's holiday to Austria, how do you really like that? We secretly 'longed' for this for a few years, but we didn't really dare. A children's holiday Austria, will that work with our kids? Hiking in the mountains? Enjoying nature? Even though we have been taking the children on holiday to Austria in the winter for years, they will probably not like the summer in the mountains. That was kind of our idea. But we were wrong!
In recent years we have fully celebrated our holidays in France, Spain or Italy. All nice, all warm, but especially all on the larger campsites. Complete. Why? Well, because we thought that was the best way to entertain our kids. And they really liked it for years in a row. We have done all kinds of activities with the children on holiday. She is happy and so are we. But we still wanted something different and it kept getting itchy. Until I got into a conversation with Landal at a holiday fair some time ago and we made the decision.

What initially held us back is that we don't see our children as huge adventurers. More like luxury fidgets . Their drink and their drink, and then it's okay. If you ask them here in the Netherlands to go for a walk with the dog, they will always have an excuse why they don't want to come along. Too hot. Too cold. Too wet. Too… well I don't know what. But behind these sweet luxury champs, it turns out that completely different people are hiding. And we enjoyed that during our holiday in Austria.
The second issue was the stay during our children's holiday Austria. An apartment instead of a cottage or furnished tent on a campsite. Do we have to? Then you don't feel like you can go outside at all. Yes, there is a balcony. But that is quite different from children walking in and out of the mobile home. At Landal's invitation, we took the step anyway and this also turned out to be a huge windfall. The apartments are not only fantastically spacious (do you have that piece of luxury again 😉), but you are on the road in Austria so much that it is no problem at all that you are in an apartment. And when you can enjoy a glass of wine or a Radler on your balcony at the end of the day in the sun… heavenly!
Another plus (compared to the boat holiday we also had)… a nice shower every day after all our effort, without having to share the shower with others!
Landal has 6 parks in Austria and we chose the park Rehrenberg in Viehhofen near Saalbach and Zell Am See. We know that a beautiful environment in winter. But what would it be like in the summer? We now know that too 😉 . And I only have one word for it. Magnificent. It is beautiful in Austria in the summer, and certainly also child-friendly.
Apart from the comfort of the Landal parks, this Austria children's holiday has been a clearly different holiday for us than in previous years.
Every day we left the house at 10.30 at the latest, only to return at 19.00 (or later). A number of times we even regretted not leaving earlier, but you can read that in the specific daily blogs I wrote every evening. There is so much beauty to see there, and the kids had a blast scrambling, climbing and hiking (yes, really!). We therefore have the idea that we definitely have to go back again to sniff a lot more nature there.
Our kids are now 8 and 12 years old, but do you have smaller children and are you still looking forward to a holiday in Austria with your children? I say:just do it. If they are significantly younger you may have to adjust your program slightly from ours, but there is more than enough you can do. On to a children's holiday in Austria!
For those who have not read my previous blogs, I will briefly explain it. We were in Viehhofen, so Salzburgerland. But what you can do there, you can also do in many other places in Austria. We have made the following walks and trips:
A fantastic walk, all the way to the top with phenomenal views. For a fully comprehensive report – with of course beautiful photos – read more below…
Beautiful, but less spectacular than we thought. And very expensive. This was therefore not included in the Salzburgerland Card that we had with our stay, about which some additional information below. You can read below why we thought this was less spectacular…
A 140 meter long suspension bridge above a valley, Ieeekkkks! Very nice, especially the walk back to the 1st lift. For a detailed story on why this is worth it…
Even if you're not really into driving, this route is worth it and the end point? Oh, lala! If you are in the area during your children's holiday in Austria, you should not miss this one.
To do for all ages. Not a huge climb, but a beautiful gorge with overwhelming water. If you want you can make the walk more interesting and challenging, check below.
Astonishingly beautiful and special to lie in the snow at 25° and have a snowball fight. Besides that.. fantastic nature. Read more…
We've all had our own favorites on this holiday in Austria. I will pass you the top of the children, followed by those of Frank and myself.
Tip:If a children's holiday in Austria is on your wish list, then also read about Melissa's experience with her walk with the children to the Verspreihütte in Kaunertal!
I have to say that Frank was really enjoying himself. The walks were not far and high enough.
Actually, the Weissee and the Krimml waterfalls are both in joint first place for me, but that was not allowed by the rest ... so I had to choose ...
If you are going on holiday in Austria for one or two weeks in the summer, the Salzburgerland Card is definitely recommended. Not only do you get very nice discounts (or in many cases even free access), you also have all the information together.
190 places of interest in a row. From museums to free use of lifts and from beautiful walks and wildlife parks to water parks. You don't pay anything extra on top of the fixed price you pay for the card. Do you only want to be on the road for 2 days on your children's holiday in Austria and spend the rest of the time at your park or campsite? Then I wouldn't recommend him. But if you - like us - really want to see and experience Austria… then it is definitely worth it!
