France is such a wonderful country to go on holiday with a family. The north of the country is perfectly passable for a shorter holiday, and beautiful in terms of nature. Of course you can also visit distant, tropical destinations such as Vietnam with your family… But this summer I and my family spent three weeks on holiday in France, one of which was in southern Brittany. As delicious as! This region is very popular among the Dutch and for good reason. Read my tips here and about the beautiful region of Brittany in France!

My grandfather used to tell us about it:how overjoyed he was when he could leave for France every summer. The Brittany region was very much loved by him. He even painted over it:beautiful landscapes with sea views with rocky coasts and picturesque villages. The area is also very attractive to me. And that is why we decided this year, despite the fact that Brittany is known for the changeable weather, to spend a week's holiday in this beautiful region.
We stayed for a week at a campsite in southern Brittany France, but you can also rent a holiday home. If you also go to South Brittany with children, keep in mind that it is a long drive. It took us 9 hours from Tilburg, excluding stops and traffic jams. Brittany therefore seems close, but don't be mistaken.
If you prefer to stay closer to home, the Bay of the Somme is a real recommendation, even for a weekend that is fine. Or of course Villages Nature Paris, which is also easy to drive for a shorter period.
Anyway, for us it became Brittany. Campsites with all kinds of accommodation can be found all over Brittany. We stayed in a beautiful, luxurious safari tent. Ideal if you like a bit of luxury, but still want to go to a campsite.
Brittany is known for its rocky coast and beautiful beaches. In addition, there are all kinds of special towns to discover. Of course we spent quite a few hours on the beach, but the weather was indeed changeable. So take good raincoats with you. What is there to see and do? Here are some highlights of our vacation:
What you really shouldn't miss when you go to Brittany in France is a visit to the rocky cape Point du Raz. We went there on a day with very rough and rainy weather with plenty of wind. And that's exactly what made this trip a beautiful sight. The lapping waves of the ocean against the rocks and the bitter wind created an extra beautiful atmosphere in this capricious part of Brittany.
Laura, like other children, thought this was impressive and she loved seeing the heavy waves of the ocean. Point du Raz is the most touristic point. Here you will also find an information point for some beautiful walks that you can take here. In addition, there are all kinds of shops and restaurants. We also visited the little brother of Point du Raz in Brittany, namely Point du Van. This is much less touristy and certainly worth it. From this point you have a beautiful view of Point du Raz and you can take a nice walk.
We stayed at a campsite in the town of Fousenant. From here it is a short drive to the harbor town of Beg-Meil. You can get on a boat here to sail to the Glenan Islands. We booked an excursion to the island of Saint Nicholas. What an incredibly beautiful island this is! Saint Nicholas is one of the islets of Brittany that is part of the Glénan Islands in France. As soon as you get on the boat to this island you will immediately relax. If you get off on the island of Sint Nicolas and if you walk further towards the beach, you will find yourself in an oasis. The clear blue water, the rocky coast and the beautiful sea view are amazing.
While we were relaxing on the beach and looking at the sea with its crystal clear water, Laura was busy collecting the most beautiful shells. She couldn't get enough of it. Despite the fact that the sea was raging and I suffered from seasickness on the boat, I thought this trip was highly recommended. The group of dolphins we saw on the way back was a gift!
Tip:Bring your own meal for lunch for a nice picnic with your children on the beach. The restaurant is overcrowded in high season. And what could be better than a lovely picnic on the beach?
This is a historic town on the harbor with a small bay where you can go to the beach.
The historic city center of this town in Brittany is still completely enclosed by old city walls, which you don't see very often in France. That makes Concarneau unique. You enter the old city center by walking over a bridge. You then arrive in the enclosed old city center where you can find all kinds of nice shops and restaurants. You can take a walk on the old city walls and browse the shops. Find a nice day so that you can eat a nice ice cream with your children or sit on a terrace to have something to eat at one of the many restaurants. If the weather is disappointing, you can also visit the marine aquarium Marinarium de Concarneau in Concarneau, which also houses a museum in addition to the marine aquarium.
Brittany is very suitable for families with children who opt for a more active holiday. Cycling and walking, but also all kinds of water sports, It is an ideal place for it. For example, go surfing, sailing, snorkeling or diving. If you want an active holiday in Brittany and France, it is advisable to plan this in advance and arrange it in advance. Walking and cycling is of course always possible, but if you want to take a sailing or surfing lesson with your family, book this in time, because in the high season this is quickly full. In addition, not every surf school and sailing school offers lessons in English. In the town of Beg-Meil there is a diving center Actisub, which also offers snorkelling trips for young people. If you are going on holiday with teenagers, this is definitely a fun trip to make!
For a trip by boat to the Glenan Islands from Beg-Meil you pay € 36 per person for an adult, € 18 for a child aged 4-12 and for a child up to 4 years € 7. We thought this was quite pricey, but despite the cost, we thought it was really worth it!
If you are going to visit Point du Raz and Point du van, you do not pay an entrance fee, but you do have to pay a parking fee. We paid € 4 for a visit here.
Have you ever had a holiday in Brittany France before? If so… how did you like that?
