Is a summer vacation safe for your family?

Destinations are opening up for summer vacation, but does that mean it's safe to travel with your family? The most important consideration when traveling during COVID-19 is weighing the risk. Whether you travel by plane or car, what are the risks associated with the destination? When traveling by plane, you need to consider the number of flights available, the number of connections, the size of the airport and the transportation from the airport to your destination. Do you go by bus or taxi, or do you rent a car? Are you staying in a hotel or an apartment?

We often take these steps for granted, but now we need to pay close attention when planning our travel plans. Despite the fear associated with travel and crowds, there are methods to protect yourself and your family while enjoying some much-needed time away.

Each family or group should determine what risks they consider acceptable for going on vacation. Below are some tips.

Airlines
The airlines have COVID-19 plans, such as limited flights, restrictive seats and alternative boarding processes. Most recommend at least face masks and have improved surface cleaning. The airport is being cleaned intensively, extra hand sanitizers have been added and extra disinfection is taking place. Pay attention to all surfaces you touch during the flight process.

Avoid touching surfaces with hands - every touch point is a potential for transfer. Use hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes on surfaces you come into contact with, such as chairs, hand rests, backrests, and tables, along with handles over the toilet. Use automatic doors and do not touch the railings of escalators or railings. If you must touch a surface, be sure to sanitize your hands and avoid touching your face. Keep social distance and wear face masks in public; Make sure to bring extra.

Cars
For shorter trips, or if transmission risks are considered too great for a person to travel by air, people may consider driving to a destination. If you choose to travel by car, consider the necessary steps to get to your destination. Everyone has a maximum distance on the road, especially with children. You have to refuel, stop to eat and take breaks.

Keep hand sanitizer in your door pocket. This means you have it quickly at hand after a stop. Keep it in each of the car doors for quick access. Keep extra face masks in the car just in case.

Accommodation
This can be tricky. There are so many options for travelers, from hotels to personal rentals – the key is to do your homework. Larger hotel chains have access to cleaning staff to clean. Smaller chain hotels or personal rentals may not have the same extensive cleaning capacity. They all need to establish how to protect guests.

Consider bringing wipes to clean surfaces in the room. Use your elbow or sleeve to open the elevator doors. Avoid crowded areas in elevators, lobbies, swimming pools, etc. Wear a face mask in public where you can.

Dining out and entertainment
We all look forward to it when we travel; in fact, for most, that's the reason we travel, for 'food, family and fun'. Restrictions remain in effect for larger entertainment venues, such as amusement parks and sporting events. Water parks can be a fun destination this time of year; most zoos and children's locations are open. Be smart,.

Wear your mask when you are in a crowd or before going to a table in the restaurant. Once there, feel free to take it off and enjoy your meal. Make sure to wash your hands before eating – bring hand sanitizer.

Do your homework for larger venues. Check out their guidelines and available activities. Be prepared and patient.
