Freedom happiness. That's the Netherlands. However? In fact, we are all quite used to it. To be free. Being able to open your big mouth. Believe what you want, and find what you want. However, that may not mean that we really value our freedom. There are even people who no longer want to celebrate Liberation Day. So I can't get my head around that. As far as I'm concerned, you should celebrate Liberation Day with children to pass it on.
Through my volunteer work at Vluchtelingenwerk, I come into daily contact with people for whom freedom no longer comes naturally. Or, here in the Netherlands, it is. A little. And it is precisely the view on refugees in the Netherlands that perhaps shows that we take our freedom for granted. I think:freedom is and remains special. And if you can pass that on to your children, the future generation might be fine. Safe and free.
Every year on May 5th it's that time again and we get a day off. Often the weather is good too. Then it is so tempting to go to the forest. To what extent do you still think about the fact why we celebrate Liberation Day? Let alone your children?
Soon there will be no more people "who have experienced the war". We should be happy about that. Because for decades our children have grown up in peace. Fortunately! But that doesn't mean we should remember how special that is. And important. If we can pass that message on to our children, there may well come a time when all children worldwide will grow up in peace. For all negative people:then we will immediately get rid of that 'refugee problem'.
It sounds a bit bland, we know… But this year, during Liberation Day, consciously reflect on peace. With your kids! And that doesn't have to be with a candle on the couch… There are plenty of fun outings that you can do with children on Liberation Day. And which are also all about celebrating our freedom!
Whether you're having a conversation with the kids on the heath about freedom, or at home… as long as the message gets across! The question is whether this will work for the average residential boulevard. But we also leave that entirely up to you. You can of course also go for a fun outing with the whole family. In the name of freedom, then? That's possible!
Below you will find a number of fun trips that you can do during Liberation Day. And we celebrate freedom with the whole country, so there is also something to do in your area. Turns out that celebrating Liberation Day with children can be a party too.
Liberation Festivals take place in 14 major cities in the Netherlands. These are organized every year by the National Committee 4 and 5 May. The festivals are aimed at visitors of all ages. They are fun, a real party actually, and they are all about one thing:celebrating freedom. Definitely a must to visit with the kids! You can read on the website which festival will take place in your area during Liberation Day.
In the Netherlands, both King's Day and Liberation Day also include free markets. Always nice to go with the kids. If you live near Amstelveen, you are in luck, because there is even a special free market for children up to and including 11 years old. So that means earning a lot of pocket money – or spending it, depending on how you look at it. Don't forget to talk about the importance of peace and freedom, after all the euros have been counted?
Asking our good friend Google will certainly provide you with a nice overview of free markets in your area.
Do you think those Liberation Festivals are still a bit too chaotic for your little one? But do you want to celebrate our freedom together? Then during Liberation Day there is a great liberation festival especially for younger visitors. The Vettt Bengelfestijn in Enschede. Sounds very cosy, and ideal for young parents to enjoy the freedom with their offspring.
A special children's festival will also take place in Haarlem during Liberation Day. Liberation doll! An ideal outing for the whole family. You can 3D print there, there are bouncy castles, face paint and a climbing wall… You can't really think of it that crazy. Just check the website.
Amsterdam is the right place for you if you want to spend Liberation Day with children. From old Dutch games such as a soap box race to real cultural outings that give a glimpse into life in wartime. Take a quick look at the website to see what there is to experience. The program is impressive!
In Breda they take a sporty approach with children during Liberation Day. A 10 camp will be held there from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. That is also possible, instead of strolling through a residential boulevard with your parents… 😉
