Southern Denmark rocks and Bogense is fantastic!

In my previous blog I wrote about the beginning of our May holiday. We spent five wonderful days on the East Danish islands. Curious? Be sure to read it again! Instead of returning home, we drove from Rødby to Bogense. Dansk.nl, the Denmark specialist, advised us to combine this for the perfect holiday. Bogense is a small town on the island of Funen, which belongs to southern Denmark. Curious about what Southern Denmark had in store for us, we continued our great journey so far.

It is about 2 hours drive from Rødby to Bogense. Dansk.nl had reserved an apartment for us here. While the landscape on the East Danish islands was still flat, on the island of Funen this lake was sloping. Nice that the kids noticed the difference too.

Table of Contents

Holiday park Danland Bogense

We immediately understood that Dansk.nl had selected holiday park Danland for us. The ground floor apartment is not big, but has everything you need. And even more. In addition to the standard furnishings, the apartment is also equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. The holiday park in Bogense is located on the coast and within walking distance of, yes, everything. Five minutes walk and you are in a supermarket. If you walk in the other direction, you will have your feet in the sea within ten minutes. But you can also walk with your kids to the harbor and the center of Bogense within fifteen minutes. Here you will find cozy restaurants, cafes and of course ice cream parlors.

Between the apartments is a garden with a (fenced) pond. It has a beautiful playground with wooden play equipment. Parents can take a seat on the nice seat by the playground when they keep an eye on their offspring, or just want to sit in the sun for a while. Also ideal for teenagers who need to update their social media 😉 .

Next to this holiday park is a campsite and an indoor swimming pool. You can go there for a fee. Bogense turns out to be an excellent base for various trips. After we had taken up residence in Danland on Wednesday and had explored the immediate area, we set out again on Thursday.

A visit to LEGOLAND

Legoland is on the program! A bit skeptical we leave Bogense in the direction of Billund, the famous Danish place where LEGOLAND Denmark is located. Wondering if our kids still like this.

It is approximately an hour and 15 minutes drive. Our ten-year-old son has always been a big Lego fan, so that's a must. Although he hasn't looked at the LEGO for a while before our holiday. But whether our twelve-year-old daughter can appreciate this outing is the question. She used to play a lot with Lego Friends, but as a small teenager she left LEGO for a while.

However, we order tickets in advance. Why? Well, if you book the tickets for LEGOLAND directly with your reservation at Dansk.nl, you will receive exclusive discounts and offers and you do not have to queue at the cash register. Ideal! You also get the 2 e free entry for the day.

We're not in yet, or we can't keep up with our children. They want to go everywhere. “Dad, look! The Eiffel Tower. In Denmark! Funny!” Our own Amsterdam is also spotted in Miniland. Our doubts are gone. The kids are unstoppable. The sun is shining and the waiting times are not long, despite the pleasant crowds.

We are having a great day. The highlight is the “The Polar X-plorer”. LEGOLAND Billund's fastest roller coaster. If you dare to keep your eyes open, you will see a polar landscape with polar bears and snow-capped mountains. On the way, the ride in the “The Polar X-plorer” takes another surprising turn. All four of us did not count on this, but this surprise made the trip complete. “But Mom, I'm not going on the roller coaster with you anymore. You scream so loud. That's really embarrassing.”

There are several roller coasters, a wild water ride and you have "Ghost, the Haunted house". Exciting haunted house with a mirror maze. Exciting and fun at the same time. I love it. There are attractions for the littlest ones, but also teenagers and their parents will certainly get their money's worth. This makes LEGOLAND Billund a great amusement park for the whole family!

Egeskov Castle an hour's drive from Bogense

We have nothing planned for Friday. We would like to go to “Egeskov Slot”, an hour's drive from Bogense. Egeskov Slot is an old castle with a play forest, mazes and a Segway and Tree top course. Unfortunately, this castle is still closed to visitors. The castle is inhabited by a young family, so I can imagine they are not open all year round. Because the May holiday fell so early this year, we were just unlucky. It would open one day later. No worries. There is so much to do in Denmark with children that another outing was easy.

Fjord &Bælt, the underwater world

We choose Fjord &Bælt. Here you can discover the underwater world in a very fun way and it is about a 50-minute drive from Bogense. So to do well. You can experience the feeding of seals, porpoises and dolphins up close. In addition, there is much to see and do! The kids don't even realize it's a museum too. You can grab crabs and stroke starfish.

You see the history of the Danish underwater world and research is done. These are performed by the incredibly friendly employees, who explain everything and let you actively help. Below the museum is a tunnel that runs through the bay with a view of the sea. Here you can see the porpoises up close, among other things. Also nice are the "farting tubes". From this come the fart sounds of various (sea) animals. This is of course hilarious. “Haha brother, can you fart harder than these sea creatures? “

Discover Odense, Hans Christian Andersen's hometown

A trip to Fjord &Bælt can also be easily combined with a visit to the city of Odense. In this nice town, with those typical Danish colored houses, is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. The famous fairy tale writer. Unfortunately, just before we reached Odense, it starts to rain very hard. We did not stop in Odense, but drove back to our apartment in Bogense. Very unfortunate, but it is the only rain shower we have had in eight days. So you won't hear us complaining. And then we immediately have a reason to go back to southern Denmark. To visit Egeskov Castle and Odense.

The king of GIVSKUD Zoo

Our last two outings are planned for Saturday. While the Netherlands is preparing for a rainy King's Day, we visit, among other things, the king of animals in the radiant sun. We visit GIVSKUD Zoo safari park. You can ride along with such a cool Safari bus, but we opt for a tour with our own car. What we like about this park is that you always drive a bit, and then arrive at a place where you can walk around for a while, so that you get very close to the animals.

There are various dining options in Givskud Zoo, but also plenty of nice picnic spots! The nice playground makes this outing complete.

It remains mighty beautiful, those large animals. Elephants, giraffes, zebras. Just name them all. And how we laughed at the monkey tricks of the Givskud Zoo monkeys, as well as our own monkey heads. The best part is that we could see the lions up close. But also very close. So impressive.

LEGO House, home of the Brick about an hour from Bogense

Fortunately, we are early in this Zootopia. This way we can see everything quietly and afterwards there is still time for LEGO House, home of the Brick. This is about half an hour away from each other and about 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Bogense.

Frankly, we don't expect much from this. Dansk.nl advised us to go here anyway. Oh well, now that we're here 😉 . We thought we would be away from here again, given the age of our children (10 and 12 years). Well, dear readers, nothing could be further from the truth. LEGO House is super fun. Not just for the kids. Also for the parents. I have seen many children waiting for their fathers, who had to place a block of LEGO. † Because in LEGO house you can just play with LEGO. All day!

Admission is free, but then you have limited access. Among other things, you have access to the LEGO shop, the LEGO square and the restaurant “MINI CHEF”, where you build your own food, as it were, just like with LEGO. Awesome. If you buy a ticket, you get access to the different Experience Zones. Trust me, while you're there, you really don't want to miss it. The zones all have their own color and in each zone you can do or experience something different.

If you buy your ticket via dansk.nl/LEGO House, you will receive a significant discount and you will be welcomed in a personal way!

Stop, and on

I go all out when making a stop motion video! You know, one of those movies where toys, in this case LEGO, come to life. Difficult to make, but super fun. Dad and the kids make their own race car. This is then raced against each other on the fat race track. Max Verstappen would be jealous of these supersonic LEGO cars. What is also very cool is the LEGO aquarium. You make a fish out of LEGO. Then you scan the fish and choose your eyes and a mouth. And then hop! Your fish will come to life in the large aquarium.

Between the different zones, you can get some fresh air outside on the various roof terraces. There are play equipment here and you have a view over the city.

LEGO House is light, fresh and clean. It is really beautiful. It's interactive and you can go back to LEGO time at the History Collection. How nice to see the LEGO from the past again. This outing is also ideal for all ages.

Southern Denmark, suitable for all ages

Not only LEGO House is suitable for all ages. All of southern Denmark is suitable for all ages. Would we go back again? Yes! Certainly! Southern Denmark Rocks and our stay in Bogense was lovely. It has so many beautiful and fun sights. We haven't seen everything yet. It's actually a shame to stay here in one place. Dansk.nl has many different accommodations, which you do not necessarily have to book from Saturday to Saturday, or exactly for a week or midweek. This allows you to put together the ideal tailor-made trip together with Dansk.nl.

The Danes are friendly, the atmosphere is friendly and the sea is always close by. Our May holiday was unforgettable! And do you want to know what we did in the second week of the May holiday?

Right…. Played a lot with LEGO!
