In our daily activities, our time is consumed by a crowded agenda, where we often forget to stand still and pay little attention to the small wonders around us. In Denmark, they understand the art of adding playfulness and a touch of magic to everyday activities. It is that Danish idea where the apparently 'ordinary' is transformed into an everyday wonder.
Tick off more than a list
People like lists. Lists of must-visit places are especially popular. The most ultimate is that of the 7 wonders of the world. There are many variations and a new list has now been added, that of VisitDenmark's 7 'Wonders'. This list goes beyond the major attractions and brings you closer to the ordinary everyday things that make Denmark such a unique holiday destination.
Wonder #1
The food
From world-class dishes to local favourites, Danish chefs have been pushing the boundaries of food culture in recent years. Be surprised in one of the many street food eateries across the country or book a table at one of the world's best restaurants.
Miracle #2
The culture
Don't ask a Dane to explain hygge. You have to undergo it. It starts with the small everyday things, such as soaking up the atmosphere in cafes or a cozy conversation with friends. Talk to Danes. Go where the Danes go and then – if you want to fit in – go by bike. Then you see more and enjoy everything around you.
Miracle #3
Nature
Nature in itself is a succession of wonders and a Dane is a happy person, because there is a lot of nature in Denmark. Fields full of undulating grain, kilometers of beach on the picturesque coast, impressive cliffs, dunes to get lost in, fairytale forests and many (uninhabited) islands where you can disconnect from the daily worries.
Miracle #4
History
Danes have certainly had their share of dramatic historical events. Think of the Vikings and the royal family. Whoever walks through history discovers the wonders of the past and breathes new life into them.
Miracle #5
The coastline
Where else but on the coast can you clear your head all year round and create space for small wonders? You are nowhere more than 52 kilometers from the sea in Denmark and for those who love islands, we have 400.
Miracle #6
The creations
Danes are very proud of their creations (and they are really good at it). Think iconic buildings, world-famous furniture and even amusement parks made of LEGO blocks. The simplicity and beauty of Danish design is woven into all aspects of everyday life.
Wonder #7
The neighborhoods
Small is nice when it comes to Danish cities. The many attractions and famous sights are close together and can therefore easily be reached on foot or by bicycle. The picturesque villages on the coast are also waiting to be discovered.
