Volcanic skiing in Auvergne #2/2

Stock up on cheeses

The local dish settles the stomach well:it is called truffade, potatoes fried with garlic and cheese. Converted, we bring back some Saint-Nectaire, the emblem of the massif, but also Cantal or different blue cheeses, Auvergne, Laqueuille, Fourme d'Ambert... Gourmands will not be able to resist the jams of Fannette, an artisan based in village of Saint-Nectaire, including Auvergne, which mixes blueberries and gentian infusion (lesdelicesdefannette.fr). At the biscuit factory of Mont-Dore (biscuiterie-du-sancy.com), we hesitate between the lava of Sancy, crunchy with almonds, and the magmas of Sancy, hazelnuts buried in a coffee meringue.

Take a geology lesson

Under Lake Pavin, slumbers the last volcano in France to erupt, 6,900 years ago. If you can see the lake from the slopes of Super-Besse, you can go around it on snowshoes. Every Wednesday, a snowshoe hike reveals the secrets of the only "meromictic" lake in France, whose deepest waters, very rich in gas, never mix! Several legends surround its dark color, fortunately hidden by a layer of ice all winter...
