The road meanders along Lake Tukapi with turquoise reflections surrounded by snow-capped mountains. In the distance, Mount Cook, the highest peak in the country, rises to 3,724 m, surrounded by equally majestic mountains. It is here that the largest glacier in the country, the Tasman, is nestled. On its milky lake, blocks of ice float like in a dream. Glacier Explorers offers to approach it by boat. Their crystals, dating back 300 to 500 years, are soft and sensual to the touch. "The blue icebergs are the newest, then they take on a white color" , underlines Duncan, the guide. Suddenly, an iceberg moves and seems to want to turn around. We quickly get away from it. In the mouth of the glacier, the ice cracks and part of it collapses into the waters of the lake. It's beautiful and scary at the same time:the favorite of the trip!
Where do we sleep? At the Hermitage Hotel from where you can also go hiking. Stargazing sessions also possible.
