It's safe to say that ski and snowboard vacations can be great. Going down the mountain, enjoying spectacular scenery as you go – what's not to like about that? Winter vacations are fun, but no doubt require much more preparation than beach vacations. With lift passes, equipment rentals and ski lessons to think about, it can be difficult to know where to start. To help you, we've put together a list of tips for skiing holidays.
1. Practice before you go: it looks easy, but you shouldn't underestimate the stamina and strength required to go down the slope. Hit the gym and work those leg muscles before your trip.
2. Dress appropriately: you don't have to pack designer clothes. Most importantly, have a breathable ski suit, fleece, gloves, hat, scarf and a decent pair of boots that fit well. Don't wear white clothes during your ski holiday – opt for bright colors instead.
3. Watch out for the sun: the reflective quality of the snow makes the sun extra dangerous on the slopes. Apply quality sunscreen throughout the day and invest in shatterproof sunglasses.
4. Take out travel insurance: no matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. Going on a skiing adventure without travel insurance is an absolute no-no! Make sure the insurance covers all winter sports you will try.
5. Equipment rental: In the unlikely event that you don't go skiing, you really don't want to be stuck with an expensive outfit or gear that you'll never use again. Rent equipment for a fraction of the price at all resorts.
6. Take ski lessons: learn to ski and make friends in a ski lesson. Even if you think you can do it on your own, this is essential for beginners and will have you feeling comfortable on the slopes in no time.
7. Bring a phone: take a working cell phone and whistle with you at all times. These can be used to signal help in the unlikely event of an avalanche. It is also advisable to take energy bars with you.
