A day of shopping in Germany and looking for a tasty and cheap restaurant? Steakhouse Hotel zur Post in Kleve Germany is highly recommended. The perfect hotspot for an extensive lunch or rather lunch. In the restaurant of Hotel zur Post you can enjoy an extensive 3-course lunch for about 10 euros.
Since we live only half an hour's drive from Kleve, we come here once in a while. If it were up to us we would come here much more often, but unfortunately the car we currently have needs repair first. The reason we like to go to Germany is simple:you can enjoy shopping here.
Kleve is a reasonable city that is just across the border near Nijmegen. In the expansive center you can shop to your heart's content (feel free to spend a whole day). In addition to all kinds of small local shops, you will also find the Kik, H&M and German chains such as Woolworth and the well-known DM. And of course you can also do your shopping at Kaufland. But there is another thing that attracts us:you can also eat delicious here. Germany is known for its good cuisine and that often starts in the supermarket where you can buy delicacies such as Nussecken (nut corners) at the bakery.
On the recommendation of my in-laws, we visited the steakhouse Hotel zur Post in November. We went here again at the beginning of May, this time with the whole in-laws and I was finally able to take pictures. Read on and discover this great hotspot in Kleve.
Hotel zur Post in Kleve Germany consists of a hotel and an associated restaurant and steakhouse. It is located on Hagsche Straße, if you walk in the center it is up the hill. The hotel has a number of rooms suitable for 1 – 4 people. These rooms can be found above the restaurant and I can only get the information about them from the website. The prices on the website are very reasonable, especially considering the fact that breakfast is included. In the photos the rooms look simple and comfortable, just enough for a good price/quality ratio.
Below the hotel is a steakhouse and restaurant (flowing seamlessly into each other) with an associated terrace at the back (here is also a large parking lot where you can park for free, tip!). Each part has its own atmosphere, but surprisingly it fits well together. If you come from the shopping street you are in a more Argentinian-looking part, then you end up in a more intimate part and upstairs it is mainly practical with access to the terrace and lots of light.
In the restaurant/steakhouse you can enjoy a daily lunch or dinner. There is a varied day menu and for lunch you can either eat á la carte or make use of the choice menu where you can enjoy an extensive 3-course lunch for 6.50 to a maximum of 12.50. This consists of a soup, main course, salad and dessert. For the main course you have a wide choice of meat, fish and even vegetarian.
Keep the opening times in mind when having lunch and dinner. The restaurant closes in between (closed from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM).
As mentioned, we have already eaten here twice, once as a family and once with the entire in-laws in honor of my dear mother-in-law's birthday. My in-laws traditionally come to Kleve every year to celebrate their birthday here, because my mother-in-law loves Kleve, thanks to the many opportunities for extensive shopping here.
I have therefore placed a reservation for 10 people via the contact form on the website, because from previous experiences we know that it can be very busy. This actually indicates that Hotel zur Post is very popular. The next day I immediately received an email back confirming that our reservation has been placed in the system.
We all opted for the 3-course lunch and were the first to enjoy a delicious freshly prepared vegetable soup. My father-in-law was not feeling well, but immediately recovered after the soup. While you wait for the main course you can serve at the salad bar. Here you have a wide choice of all kinds of vegetables and sauces, so that you can put together a salad to your own taste.
Then the main courses were served. Precisely because we were with such a large group, everyone had something different and that is not only nice for the photos, but also immediately gives the opportunity to see whether the different dishes are to your liking. I chose a typical German dish (can hardly deny my origin 😉 namely Leberkäse with egg and potatoes, while my nephew had a pizza (which they have presented nicely in the shape of a rabbit). Furthermore, a vegetarian pasta, pasta carbonara, a mixed grill plate, turkey breast and much more.You can see in the pictures below that these are generous portions, which were very tasty.
You end the 3-course lunch with an ice cream consisting of a scoop of strawberry ice cream with whipped cream. Very simple, but just enough to enjoy it for a while.
Not only is the food very tasty, the service is also good. The owners are clearly from the Serbia/Croatia region, but speak reasonably good German. It seems that they also understand Dutch, although the answer is in German. Everything is taken into account, even if you skip a course and in between you are asked whether everything is to your liking, whether you still want a drink and whether it tastes good. You don't have to wait too long between courses (around 5 – 10 minutes), which makes a difference. Incidentally, the salad bar allows you to serve more often, ideal if the food turns out to be not enough.
Given the prices, the large selection and the portions of the dishes, the steakhouse Hotel zur Post in Kleve Germany gets a big 10 from us.
