We have not booked a real holiday this summer, due to our new house. Now – after a weekend away – we've got the hang of it again and I'm trying to see if we can't take a break after all. While scouring the internet, I ended up on a houseboat while on vacation. That seems nice dude! To start with, I love the adventurous feeling that sleeping on a boat gives, and besides that, it's nothing else on the water.

We have already taken a holiday on a boat before, a few years ago. Sailing around for a week and sleeping on a motorboat in Friesland. It was the holiday of the double booking;). But a houseboat holiday also seems fantastic to me. And not only me, the whole family is immediately enthusiastic. We love water! A cruise vacation is also fantastic, but this time we go for our own 'private boat'…
For us it will only be a short holiday on a houseboat, because Frank doesn't have that many days off because of the move. But you can also enjoy and rest during a short vacation, right? And let's face it, a houseboat is ideal for getting together again. I also only now found out that there is actually quite a lot of choice if you want to spend your holiday on a houseboat. From large to small, from affordable to fairly pricey and in the 'countryside' or near/in a city. I have listed some nice houseboats for inspiration, suitable for a short or longer holiday.
Okay I admit, not all of them are suitable for our budget, but one has to dream, don't you? By the way, the first few are doable in terms of budget!
This lovely houseboat is located in Maastricht, a great place for a holiday on the water and yet the combination with a nice city. I've actually been to Maastricht myself, but honestly not yet with the kids. Anyone of you who might have some nice tips for a city trip to Maastricht?
Would you rather seek out nature and evoke the real camping feeling, but then on the water? What do you think of this cool hiker's cabin in Weesp? Do not expect a huge surface, you really have to see this hiker's cabin as a large caravan, the surface is 12 m². But this secluded location on the water, with a kayak in front of your door and yet also on the mainland gives you all the options, doesn't it? You have everything at hand and even the dog is welcome!
As I mentioned above, we have previously had a boat holiday in Friesland. A beautiful province to view from the water. This houseboat will undoubtedly also provide a wonderful holiday. It is quite large, radiates a lot of peace and also has a sauna. Not really suitable for a city trip, but nice if you want to relax.
While looking around for houseboats and other holiday homes, I also came across this houseboat. Let me first say… this houseboat is not really 'affordable' for us, but this boat looks fantastic. To get through a ring. I would love to spend a weekend here! In fact… I think I could very well live here too 😉 .
Giethoorn is always a nice place to spend a weekend (or longer). With a holiday on a houseboat you can fully feel the atmosphere that Giethoorn has to offer. Especially if you also ensure that you have a boat with you that you can use to navigate the canals.
I think for this short vacation we choose a houseboat near a city. This way we can combine a fun city trip with the kids with relaxing on the water. I totally see it! And then -in due course- I book another weekend alone with my hubby. For a short break on a houseboat where we only have to make time for each other. In peace, in the middle of nature. With sauna!
What I especially liked to see while surfing around is that there are so many different layouts of houseboats. From sleek and modern to cosy, small and cosy. Something for everyone!
Have you ever spent a holiday on a houseboat? And how long did you stay there?
