The internet is still indispensable on holiday. Two thirds consider WiFi when choosing the accommodation. And no fewer than nine out of ten holidaymakers are online during the holidays. The smartphone is the most used for this (79%). One in three holidaymakers works during the holidays. Two thirds of the Dutch do turn off roaming when they go on holiday. This is apparent from market research conducted by research agency Multiscope among 1,005 Dutch consumers.
Half of the holidaymakers have more frequent contact with family and friends than in the past because of the internet. The main reason for going online is to keep track of private mail and WhatsApp. Every day 43% check private mail and 42% are daily busy with WhatsApp. Private e-mail (85% at least once a week) and WhatsApp (80%) are the most frequently used, but holidaymakers are also mainly online to look up something specific (84% at least once a week), to check the weather forecast (82%) or follow the news (75%). Half of the holidaymakers check their balance online during the holiday.
70% frequently visit social media. Eight out of ten social media users read other people's social posts. Four in ten also post on social media. Incidentally, 60% find it strange when someone shares their experiences on social media almost every day. Holiday photos are not or hardly saved until after the holiday. Nearly six in ten (57%) vacationers share the photos during their vacation. The most popular way for them is to share via WhatsApp (75%). Half share the photos via social media and 28% send them by email.
One in three holidaymakers with a job interrupt their holiday to work. For a third of them it is necessary to work during the holidays. One in five holidaymakers with a job are expected to be reachable on holiday. The employer even expects one in twelve to work.
