France is known for its typical bakeries that produce pastries that are the envy of the world, but it seems to have a serious competitor among its European neighbors. This is Portugal and more precisely its capital, Lisbon, where Pastéis de Belém is located, the most rated bakery in the world on the TripAdvisor online review site in 2017. The establishment has held for 180 years (eh yes!) the secret of pastel de nata, a kind of flank made of puff pastry and pastry cream, which is a real staple of Portuguese cuisine. The legendary place received more than 10,000 reviews between October 2016 and October 2017, the vast majority of which described it as "excellent".
The Pastéis de Belém is, according to the comments, a place “not to be missed”, “a must” with “custards straight out of paradise”. Many visitors praised the pastel de nata and its cream made with eggs, sugar and cinnamon, among other things. You can sprinkle the caramelized top of the pastry with a little more cinnamon or icing sugar before the first bite. Indeed, it makes you want! The trick:it forms an exceptional duo with coffee. The only inconvenience mentioned online is the wait, which can be counted in hours in high tourist season. But first of all, it's worth it! Come on, it's added to our list of places to visit at least once in your life!
