Zeeland is the most popular province among Dutch people who are holidaying close to home this summer. Last year Zeeland was still in second place after Limburg, but this summer the coastal province has worked its way up to the top position. The second place is shared by Noord-Holland and Overijssel. Limburg is this year in third position of popular summer holiday regions and thus manages to keep Friesland out of the top three. This is apparent from research by Casamundo.
The Dutch are also going on holiday longer this year compared to last year. Last year, Dutch people tremble at their Dutch holiday destination for an average of five days, in the summer of 2016 this is an average of six days. Short trips are also gaining popularity among travelers staying in the Netherlands. This year the share of short trips to a domestic destination increased to 28%, but the vast majority opt for a holiday duration of one week. Domestic holiday destinations also appear to be equally popular among families and couples (both 35%), while last year families clearly took the lead (42%). Larger groups of families or friends follow closely.
